How do I remove an icon from my desktop?

I just bought my Macbook Pro, and I've been getting it setup the way I want it. I installed Google Chrome and it left a white drive icon the desktop. I've tried putting it in the trash bin, but it says it cannot be deleted because Chrome is using it (even though there is no chrome window open). I've also tried dragging it into a folder in Finder (applications, documents, etc.) and it will copy it into the folder, but the icon is still there on the desktop. What should I do? Is there another way I can hide it or cut and paste it into a folder?

Control-click the Chroms icon and choose Quit, drag the Chrome application icon to the Applications folder, eject the mounted drive, and then delete the dmg.
