I don't see why not. I used mine in Europe with no problems.
Since you mentioned iPhone in the subject, I strongly suggest you put it on Airplane mode and leave it there the whole time to avoid any accidental data charges. You can reenable wifi when on Airplane mode to use like an iPod touch.
