What do I do when my iPod won't sync any new material?

I seem to be having trouble getting new material on my iPod classic. I've tried several times and I have restarted it several times as well. I think it is probably just my iPod telling me it's time to be replaced(it's 5 years old). I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions?
