Before you lose your iPad turn on Find My iPad.

Use the settings app. Go to Privacy. Turn on Location Services then turn on Find my iPad.

This will allow you to locate your iPad should you lose it and it is on. If it is stolen, turned on and not wiped you can locate it and remotely wipe your data from the iPad.

But Find My iPad MUST be turned on before the iPad goes missing.

Actually, if the concern is loosing it or having it stolen, I would the the very FIRST thing to do is to set a password lock code, and set the password lock to lock immediately.

Find my iPad, IMO, is pointless if the iPad was unsecured when lost or stolen.
