BackUp Time Capsule on a external Hard Drive on 10.8.2

Hey Apple Fan Boys / Girls 🙂!

i have a Time Capsule and a new 2 TB Hard Drive.

I will Backup my Time Capsule to the Hard drive with the old Archive Function from Airport Utility.

With Airport Utility (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482 - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1281) no problem.

But with the new 6.2 Version (http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1628) isn't possible to do that.

And i can't install the old Airport Utility on my 10.8.2 System 😟 its to new.

How can i copy / clone the Time Capsule to another Hard Drive now?

Thanks Boys and Girls!

See this article to learn how to install AirPort Utility 5.6 on Mountain Lion, so you get back the features that were lost in the "upgrade" to Mountain Lion.

Just keep both AirPort Utility 5.6 and 6.x on your Mac and use the one that you need at the time.

I think Apple decided the old archive was too slow.. and it is extremely slow. Although the advantage of it is that the TC can archive stand alone, without data travelling on the network.. no hard disk access whilst it happens.. and it can go 24hours or more for the new big drives.

It is much faster to plug the drive into your computer.. and using ethernet to just copy or use a backup utility like superduper or CCC to copy things across.

See Pondini for info on how to copy sparsebundles.. Q18

http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html

This will run at around 2x the speed of the local backup as stupid as that sounds. The USB is very inefficient in the TC.

And you don't need to be sophisticated about it.. just copy and paste the files, if all you want is a backup.. but do not run TM whilst you are doing it.

I agree with Bob.. install 5.6 on whatever version OS you run.. it isn't hard (you can use unpkg instead of pacifist).

But if you want to make continual backups from the TC.. archive is hopeless, as it has no settings.. just a full disk backup everytime... if you want to save a 1GB change to your 1.5TB of files.. you have to backup 1.5TB to do it. For incremental backups pay for one of the 3rd party utilities. Far superior method.
