I managed to figure out how to fix this on my iphone 4.

I went through and deleted all of the songs with the grey dotted circle next to to the from the "on my iphone" list. you have to do that individually, by right clicking on them, clicking delete, and then hitting okay when it asks you if you want to delete them from your phone.

I then went back to my itunes library and made sure the songs were in all the playlists I have on my phone, and dragged them in if they weren't. (If you usually sync your whole library onto your phone it should be fine.)

Then I went back into the device and checked 'sync only checked songs and videos', then went and checked the playlist i wanted under the music tab (or just check 'entire music library' if thats what you want.)

Hit sync, and it should add all the grey dotted songs one by one, the circle sort of goes around like a timer.

If this doesn't work, i would try manually adding the song by dragging them from your library into the device when it appears on the side, after deleting them from the "on my iphone" list.

Hopefully this helps (:

Hello This circle thing has been bugging me for days I have been making ringtones from my libary of music which is very easy to do. The difficult bit is when i add them to tones to sync with my phone they appear as shaded out with a tick in the box with a small dotted grey circle. I have tried everything and been very unsucessful but yesterday i managed to get my tones synced with my phone but it took me for ever so I would suggest if you are going to make ringtones do a few alltogether and then do it.

The only way I could get it to work was take the tick out of the box in the summary tab manually manage music, which in turn when i connected my i phone it took all my music and tones off my i phone 5 I then had to sync all the libary back to my phone whilst it was doing this click on the tones tab and tick the boxes of the new tones you want to add and press sync while the libary is still updating and hey presto all new tones were on my phone along with all my music again. As soon as this is done please tick the box in summary to manage music manually as the next time you connect your phone it will take all your music and data off. I know this is a long way round the proplem having to take your entire content off and put it all back on but its the only thing that worked for me. Oh by the way after you have done this do a back up either to your computer or to i cloud so no data is lost.

Hope this helps

Hi Folks,

I do have a similar problem. But in my case this only aplies to songs on my iPhone. They only are shown in the iTunes "on my iphone" view. When searching for them on the phone, they are not there.

So basically all I want is to delet the entries in iTunes. Unfortunately, they can´t. At least I don´t know how. Does anybody have an ida for that case.

Btw. activating and deactivating iTunes Match didn´t solve it.

I downloaded one of the file explorer programs (iFunbox in my case) for my PC and deleted everything out of the "Purchases" folder on the phone's "Raw File System". After a couple of syncs with iTunes everything was back to normal. It appears that something was screwed up on the iPhone side that iTunes couldn't sort out. I don't think anything could sync from iTunes to the phone, not just the greyed out items.

This is why resetting and restoring the iPhone also works for a lot of people. It's overkill though, deletes your app data, and just wastes your time setting everything back up after the restore. Better to use the surgical approach of a file system explorer program on your PC to fix what appears to be a mundane data corruption issue.

Hi!

I also have three songs with this circle, BUT:

* My media library is empty

* iTunes was installed freshly (before that I had removed all Apple Folders from ProgramData, AppData/Local/Roaming)

* iPhone 4s with iOS7.0.4 did not contain any files in the music library -> also empty

What I did was, that I have "toyed" with the music library on my iPhone.

To be more precisely, I have pressed the buttons "Download Song from iCloud" next to those three songs while the iPhone was still connected to iTunes.

Then I had cancelled the download by pressing the buttons again.

After trying to sync iTunes with iPhone again, those 3 broken entries with the grey dotted circle popped up in the msuic folder of the iPhone in iTunes. Remember: the music folder of the media library in iTunes is STILL empty! So no songs there!

I have already tried nearly everything with syncing to get rid of those 3 dead entries with the circle. Nothing helped. Syncing the empty media library did not help, manually deleting the songs from the phone did not help. After synching in iTunes they pop up again in the music folder, although there is nothing to sync.

This really seems to be a bug.

Now I will try my last option: creating a backup, reset the phone and restore it again.

BTW: iCloud sync program is not installed.

Okay I finally have gotten my songs to download, amen! I know it ***** trying over and over, but call it quits for a day and then wait a day or two and pull your itunes back up. I can guarantee that if you go to "on this iphone" the same songs will be greyed out. Go back to the info tab and make sure that the boxes are all unchecked! If they aren't, uncheck them and apply it to your phone. Then, check the box that says manage music manually, and apply that. Once I applied that, alllll my music downloaded, and as they all downloaded, the greyed out songs did too! The circles should fill in, and once the song is downloaded, it should look just like all the other songs in your library! Hope this helps everyone!
