Using an older iMac as a second monitor

I have a late 2007 iMac and a new 2012 iMac. I want to use the older iMac as an extended monitor for my new iMac. What type of cable and software do I need to accomplish this objective?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.1)

You cannot. That is not supported on iMacs that old. Only iMacs from 2009 forward support some form of Target Display Mode.

Only 27-inch iMacs and iMacs with Thunderbolt ports can be used as an external display > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302 It means that you can't use the Mid 2007 iMac as an external display just connecting it to your Late 2012 iMac.

Instead, you have to use a VNC client, that uses your network to make the Mid 2007 iMac an external display for the Late 2012 iMac. You can use ScreenRecycler to use your old computer as an external display for your new iMac
