When I plug my iPhone5 into my 12V car system using the USB charging cable and the adapter, I get the Charging is Not Supported with this Device warning. What's up with that?

Clean the connector.
Try a different charger cable.

I've had this problem with car charging. with three different types of charger/transmitter. After a lot of Googling, I had a moment of inspiration. I bought A 75W Compact Mains Invertor from Maplins.
Mine hasat the fronta usb and a 3 pin mains outlet. I use the iphone connector cable into the USB and it works!!!
There are others cheaper available on ebay and amazon which are similar.
I expect the 3 pin outlet can be used with a laptop. I'm happy as a pig in **** as it's been a big problem for me for the past several months.
Seems like the long way around, but if Apple doesn't come up with a solution I'll have to look elsewhere, I guess.

If you use a usb power socket that plugs in to 12v socket (used to be cigarrette lighter )
and then use the Apple lightning cable it will charge as long as the USB power plug is of good quality

have discovered that 1000ma usb car adapter may be a cheaper solution. Ho hum
This the device I am referring to although any premium brand does the trick
