The Office 2008 applications themselves will work, but your copy might have an installer which won't. If you haven't already installed it, do so prior to upgrading.

About a year ago myself and others took a look at this particular myth. There never were any Office 2008 copies with PPC onstallers. However, the analysis addon is PPC and won't install.
If you have one please give the build number over so I may check.
Sounded like an interesting intellectual challenge (and you know how much I like Rosetta-related challenges!).

Disk 2 of the Office Expressions (Pack), amongst the other addons, also used to be available as an download.
Apologies, it's called Microsoft Query for Excel, for connection to SQL databases, it is a PPC rather than Universal app. It was available for 2004 and 2008 (don't know if there is a version for 2011)

Please restate these two contradictory posts. What are you saying about Office 2008 and its possible inability to work without Rosetta in Lion or Mt. Lion?

Office 2008 installs and runs correctly on Lion and Mountain Lion, the Microsoft Query add on does not, is that clear enough?

Actually, the Query capability was never part of Office 2008. It's absence was one of the major criticisms when it was introduced.
