We need more information, how are you trying to connecting the drive to your computer?, what type of computer? and do you want to set it up as a Time Machine backup?

mac pro and yes connecting to computer, i do have app for time machine installed never used, bought lacie drive at mac store. wanting to back up prior to upgrading to mountain lion. need ti install dragon speech to text software due to shoulder break
Okay, first you will need to setup time machine to backup your system to the new hard drive. Just open time machine and turn it on, then select your new hard drive and time machine will start the backup in a few minutes.

thanks for the help! successfully backed up thru time machine last night!! now on to upgrade to mountain lio and load dragon speech to text.
