my optical drive doesn't function anymore. I can't read any cd or dvd I insert. Therefore I can't install programs or listen to music. Is this mechanical or could it be software driven?

I tried doing a SMC re-initialisation but it didn't seem to work.
So I am taking my computer to a "genius" tomorrow.
If you tried all the fixes and it still doesn't work then it is Broken. You can have Apple replace ir or you can buy an External DVD that connects to a USB port.
Note:
It does not have to be sold by or have the Apple name on it for it to work on your Mac computer. Any brand will work and most can be bought for around $30US.
I thank you for the suggestion Shootist but like you say, I'm not sure that I have tried "all the fixes", I tied that one with the SMC.
Are there any other fixes I can try or was that the only one?
I use bootcamp also and have the same problem when trying to install a program on windows.
Have you tried using a drive cleaner? Same can be purchased from any store that sells CD/DVDs.
