MacKeeper is lying about it being apple approved. Moving it to the trash and emptying would uninstall the program itself, but repairing the damage it caused is a different story. You would have to search finder for anything MacKeeper related and delete that. You would also have to check your settings for anything MacKeeper changed.

I would highly recommend restoring from a Time Machine Backup. I would also like to add that you should stay away from any software that claims to speed up your mac found on the internet. Only trust software of that kind from the mac app store. I would also warn against antivirus software because that screws certain functions on your Mac, most famously dictation. That is all.

MacKeeper is definitely not a "virus," or any other kind of malware. To say that it is is extremely misleading, and causes much confusion as to what is or is not malware. It is what many here would call "crapware." It is extremely aggressively marketed, in sometimes very unethical ways, and once on your machine, it scares you into buying it to fix thousands of "critical" issues that are actually not problems at all. It is "Apple approved" in the sense that it is signed with a developer certificate issued to Zeobit by Apple, and there is a trimmed-down version (called "911 Bundle") that has been approved for the Mac App Store. None of this means that Apple actually recommends installing it.

People who have requested a refund from Zeobit have actually been successful, so it would not be a waste of your time to try to get a refund.

A virus is NOT benign, it is always considered to be malicious. Further, the definition of a virus is that it 1) installs by itself, with no user interaction, and 2) spreads itself from one computer to another, again all by itself. MacKeeper does neither of these things.

MacKeeper is not a virus, and calling it that only creates confusion and harms your own credibility.

computer virus (a software program capable of reproducing itself and usually capable of causing great harm to files or other programs on the same computer)

That right there is the princeton.edu definition of a computer virus. MacKeeper reproduces itself and causes harm to the computer (personal experience), therefore according to Princeton definition of a computer virus, MacKeeper is a virus. You're one to talk about bad credibility with your arrogance.
