copying Time Machine back-ups

Hi;

[Please advise if this is the wrong forum.]

I have been using my LaCie external HD for my Time Machine back-ups. It is now corrupted and needs to be reformatted. I have been able to copy files from the LaCie to another drive (WD) with the exeption of the TM back-up files. I get a message that "The backup can’t be copied because the backup volume doesn’t have ownership enabled."

What am I missing?

You'd be well advised to start over with the new drive, rather than copying files in an unknown state. Put the old drive aside until you're sure you'll no longer need the data, then erase it and either recycle or re-use it. You need more than one backup anyway. One is not enough to be safe, as this experience shows.

If you insist on trying to copy the backups, make sure the box marked Ignore ownership on this volume is not checked in the Info dialog for both the source and the destination volumes. Copy TM backups in the Finder often fails.
