Update to 6.1.2 = massive problems

I updated my iPhone 4 to 6.1.2 and now any time I try and do anything at all with it in iTunes (11.0.2) I see a pinwheel for several minutes, followed by a failure to actually update any changes. Any similar stories? Advice?
