Hi every one,
I have seen quite a few questions about disabling Java and applets.
Can somebody tell me why this is needed and what does Java do.
I use Safari and Firefox on my Macbook for general browsing for information, using ebay and e-mails.

You probably don't need Java for your use. Jave is a security nightmare, everytime Apple patches java to fix one security hole another pops up. Running java could allow someone to gain access to personal information inyour computer. Disable it.

Thanks for the information. I have disabled it on Safari but can not see how to do it with Firefox. I am using version 19.0.
