I am looking to purchase an ipad mini (with Sim) and one of the purposes is to utilise it with the Tomtom app. I shall be travelling throughout both the UK and Europe and wonder if it will work? After doing reserach I am under the impression if it does work the time used whilst out of the UK won't rack up a massive phone bill for data as the maps are already downloaded and the sim is used for obtaining the location with the GSM network. Can anyone cast any light?
The 3G/4G iPads (including the Mini) have a built-in GPS chip, which the wifi-only models don't have. As long as the maps are already downloaded, which they should be with the TomTom app, then you shouldn't need to be online to use it - some people buy cellular iPads for the built-in GPS and don't activate a 3G/4G service on it.
As long as it has a clear view of the sky then you should be ok e.g. you may have problems if there are a number of tall buildings or dense tree cover

This maybe obvious but like GPS have to be able to site satelites is that the same for an ipad mini? Just wondering on mounting in my vehicle.

Yes I have ,but I prefer Garmin which I use also ....but I have
always had that preference 🙂
