iCloud Mac and iOS

I maybe being stupid but...

The latest version of Pages permits the user to browse previous versions of documents. Very useful.

iCloud allows the user to access up to date versions of documents, via iPad etc., from anywhere on the world. Also, very useful.

But, storing documents in iCloud precludes the use of the previous versions facility. Aaaargh! Very frustrating.

Is there a way of storing a document in iCloud and on the Mac? Having the original on the Mac and a copy in iCloud is no good as any updates (whether done via the Mac or the iPad) will be specific to the version of the document I'm working on.

This seems very daft and is certainly not the seamless experience I was hoping for. I must be missing something. Please help.

Thanks

DD
