Every time I turn my iMac on it will not connect to the internet until I open System Preferences / network / Assist me. that reports that my internet access appears to be OK, and hey presto my web home page appears, and everything if ok. The same happens if I have opened Mail, nothing until I've gone through the above proceedure.

This has been happening for a week.

The iMac uses Mountain Lion.

I have no such difficulty with my Macbook Pro which runs Snow Leopard.

I have deleted the safari caches and logs, to no avail.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work.

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the grey Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal.

To Mohamed.Montreal and Eric Root,

Thanks for the suggestions I have implimented them and they've helped a lot.

I also contacted Apple Support in the UK and the rep' there talked me through a couple of things;

Go to Finder / Go / COMPUTER / Macintosh HD / Library / SystemConfiguration.

Highlight the file and bring up Info, there change the name to SystemConfiguration.old

Control+click on it and drag it onto the desktop, that done you can delete any original SystemConfiguration file from the HD.

Delete all references to your network from Network Preferences

Restart the computer.

Go to Network Preferences and select your original network. WARNING, YOU'LL NEED YOUR PASSWORD to re-enter the details.

Restart the computer.

Test to see if Safari now connects to the internet. If everything's OK Restart the computer once again.

My problems were solved.

I hope this is of some help to others.

All the Best, Deerick.
