Software Update for mobile clients

I have a shop of about 30 MacBook Pros, most running lion, a straggler here or there running SL. I want to use Software Update service on my mac mini server. I know how to do the default writes and that isn't a problem, what I want to know is this: is there a way to have it check for my server, if it can't find it go to apple? the users take their MBP home with them most nights, and take them on their trips to other offices etc, I don't want to limit updates to when they are physically here.

is this possible?
