I have an iPhone 5. I am taking it on holiday with me. I can 'backup' my photos to iCloud so if I loose my phone I don't loose my photos. However, I have an iMac at home running OS 10.6 and iPhoto 08 - which don't support photo stream / iCloud.
How can I get my photos off iCloud and on to my iMac without using photo stream in iPhoto (because I can't)?

Unfortunately, Photo Stream can only be used on a Mac if it has got OS X Lion or Mountain Lion, and iPhoto '11 or Aperture 3, so you can't recover them without upgrading both Mac OS X and iPhoto. That's because you can't get the photos from iCloud.com, as you can do with other services

So there is no way to get my photos off iCloud and on to my iMac? Surely this should be a simple thing?
Are there other ways for me to backup my photos without using iCloud and photo stream (without having to email all my pics to myself which would get very tedious). I've heard people talk about DropBox (but don't know what it is)? Can I connect a USB memory stick to my iPhone??

If you have those photos on the Camera Roll (on your phone), just connect the iPhone to the iMac (if you can access to the iMac) and transfer your photos using iPhoto.
Dropbox is a cloud storage service, where you can put all your data and sync it between all the computers and devices
