My Mac Book Pro does not recognize the presence of a DVD or CD

Ever since I upgraded my MacBook Pro, it does not recognize a DVD or CD of any type when I put it in. I have a store bought DVD, the Social Network, which worked fine before upgrading to OSX operating system. Music CD's were okay then, too. Now, neither is even recognized by the player. Thought maybe it needed to be reloaded, but na't figure out how to do that. This is very frustrating, and makes me start to second guess my decision to switch to an Apple product. I've only hd this computer about 18 months, did the upgrade last September (?) and have had difficulties ever since. HELP me please!!!

What exact version? 10.7, 10.7.1, 10.7.2, ........ Go to the  menu and select About This Mac.

Try this: OS X Mountain Lion: Use Apple Hardware Test

Sorry, I should have been more specific. It is 10.8.2. Processor 2.3GHz Intel Core i5 Memory 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

I see you live in Temecula. My Dad lived in Hemet for many years. until he passed in March of 2007.

I visited often, really like the area, but my wife won't move.

Download and apply the OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.2 (Combo) and see if that will jump start the optical drive.

Okay, downloded, restarted computer. Inserted prerecorded DVD once more, same result - It tried to read the disc, rejected (and ejected ) after 3 attempts. I truly think this is a software reload issue, but I'm still a neophyte with this system.

Log into another user account on your Mac and see if the problem is repeated there?

Not sure how to do that, or from what level. Didn't find any tests I could run from the DVD when I selected that.

As I said, I'm a neophyte with Apple, have had Windows based computers for 15 years prior to this.

I truly appreciate you sticking with me on this, thank you.

Use Apple Hardware Test

Open the Help Viewer’s Action pop-up menu (looks like a gear) and choose Print to print these instructions.
Disconnect all external devices except the keyboard, mouse, display, and speakers. If you have an Ethernet cable or external DVD drive, disconnect them.
Restart your computer, holding down the D key while the computer restarts.After your computer restarts, you should see the Apple Hardware Test chooser screen. If you don’t, Apple Hardware Test may not be available on your computer. You may be able to start Apple Hardware Test from the Internet. Reconnect your computer to the network, and then restart your computer while holding down both the Option and D keys.

I tried both tests, since off line didn't work. Did short (no troubles) then long test. Everything seems to have passed on that one, too..

I am done for today, will pick up the hunt again tomorrow. Thanks again for all of your help and hanging in there with me..

That's what it looks like I'll have to do. I just don't truly understand how it played a pre-recorded DVD fine before the upgrade, but gave me problems with any DVD or CD afterwards. I even used a DVD cleaner just to be sure, but it made no difference.

Thnaks for the helpful suggestions, I'll let everyone know what it turns out to be.
