Using microphone with earphones iPad 2

The microphone on my Ipad 2 is not working. Vacuuming it helped once or twice as did gently cleaning it with compressed air. Now though nothing I do can help the situation. This is frustrating as I need to use it for Skype/Facetime conversations. So, thought I might be able to work around the problem by using an external microphone and bought earphones with microphone. Earphones and controller work find for audio but microphone picks up nothing. Is there some setting on the iPad needed to make this microphone work ? If this isn't a possible solution any other suggestions on how I can deal with the microphone problem ? The iPad is no longer under warranty, by the way, so returning it is not an option. Local Apple store doesn't do repair work of any kind and sad only thing it could do would be to sell me a new iPad 2 at discounted price.

I should also note that have borrowed friend's iRig Mic Cast which slots into earphone jack on the iPad 2. In this case the microphone function works. I can Skype/Facetime and record myself taking notes etc. The drawback is that this means iPad speakers don't work. So this could be a workaround but it would mean that I couldn't use the iPad to have my wife and I speak to someone together since there only audio comes through earphones hooked into the iRig.

So, there could still be a hardware problem but the fact that one kind of external microphone works suggests something else may be at play ?
