I am having problems getting footage off of my new JVC Everio Digital Media Camera that uses a hard drive for recording. I have a GZ-MG37 and I cannot get iMovie to recognize it because it uses USB 2.0. Let alone getting the footage onto my computer into some format. Can anyone help? Has anyone experienced this yet?
thanks.
Powerbook G4 15',
Mac OS X (10.4.6),
have Final Cut Express HD as well
Sorry to bear bad news. The JVC produces the wrong files to work with FCE. They are Mpeg2 and not DV that FCE requires.
This camera is for people who shoot and then and watch without the need for editing or production work.
A DV camera for editing and working with FCE is the way to go.
USB does not have device control.
There are solutions to get Mpeg to DV, search this forum for some ideas.
A simple way is to dub the JVC stuff to a DV camera via analogue cables.
Won't work with USB, as you found out. The only way you'll be able to get footage off this camera and into iMovie is with an analog/digital converter like the Canopus ADVC-110 or a DV-based camera that supports analog/digital passthrough. Of course, that assumes that your JVC has an A/V (analog video & audio) output.
You could also go through some very convoluted conversions from MPEG2 to DV but I think you're going to find that way too involved & frustrating to do more than once.
