I have a a ipod nano (6th gen) but the home button doesn't work.
Is there any way I can re-assign the home button function to another button / gesture?

I assume you're talking about the sleep/wake button if so, welcome to the club, you will find many of us broken 6th gen nano owners here. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2586714?tstart=0 If you're out of warranty it seems that you're out of luck.
Apple hasn't really dropped the ball on this one.
Mine has done that 3 times now (breaks once a year), it seems to be an issue with the product itself. It's also happend to my siblings and friends.
My suggestion is not to bother with any of the products with this button as Apple seems to have not rectified the situation and doesn't offer much in the line of support. I don't understand why they would continue to replace a product that is garenteed to break
