Q: iMessage on mac not working properly

Hello to the mac community!

I own an iPod touch and a MacBook pro with mountain lion.  iMessage on my iPod touch works perfectly (it always sends, always receive messages seamlessly, and all the messages are in chronological order within the conversation.) On my MacBook pro, it's all the contrary. Messages are sent only 50 percent of the time (I often get "failed to send" with an exclamation point and have to resend it. I may have o do this 3-3 times. Other times it may work in one try) Sometimes I receive messages on my mac after 15 minutes. Also, the messages on my mac are not in chronological order so I often have to look at my iPod to be able to read the conversation.

I checked. Both iPod and mac are on the same email address for iMessage. I do not get why it works perfectly on iPod and it kindda ***** on mac.

Anybody has this problem? Anybody knows how to fix the issue?

Cheers

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

I tried everything that was suggested in this post. I am having a problem using imessage, or facetime, from my mac. I just updated to my mac I am running OSX 10.9.5. But even before the update, I could not seem to send or receive messages from imessage, or make any facetime calls on my mac. However, Facetime would ring when someone would facetime with me, but when I answer nothing happens and the window disappears. My phone at that time would still be ringing with the facetime call and is the only way I could answer the calls.. help.. this is so annoying......

    Hi,

What version of the Mac OS X were you running before hand ?

At OS X 10.8.2 the Messages app was updated to version 7.0.1 which then required that the Serial Number was on the Mac so that the iMessages account could use it.

You can read it by going to the Apple Icon Menu > About this Mac and clicking twice on the line that tell you the current OS version.

It will change to the Build Number (Another way Apple counts the versions) and then to the Serial Number.

If the Serial Number is present then you should then get IDS items in the Keychain

Go to Applications/Utilities and open the Keychain Access App

Have "login" top left and "passwords" lower left.

In the Right hand pane find the IDS: YourAppleID.comOrNet-Auth Token and Delete it.  The "YourAppleID.comOrNet" should be the emails you use as your Apple ID in iMessages.

If all these appear to be in order then go to ~/Library/Preferences and delete (Drag to Trash) com.apple.imagent.plist.

This .plist is for an App that supports both Messages and FaceTime.

    Hey Ralph,

I went through the steps you mentioned and successfully executed them other than for the third step where you asked to delete com.apple.imagent.plist. I did not have this file in my preferences....... and nothing works still. As a matter of fact, I tried to go back to iCloud and sign out in hopes that this might make a difference and Now I get an error when I try to sign out saying " Your iCloud Account couldn't be removed at this time. Turn off all iCloud services and try again". I try to restart my laptop and even then I get the same error message. No idea what is happening.... Help...............

Thank you SO MUCH for replying back and assisting. This problem is beyond annoying..

P.S. I don't remember what OS version I had before this one..Also, this problem started before the update and continued after the update.....  =(

I checked some forum posts pertaining to this problem and some people successfully overcame this problem though signing out of iMessage, calendar, itunes, app store, and facetime. I did that yet I still have the same problem... Keychain won't uncheck....

Also, it is important to note that I purchased an iphone 6 a few weeks ago, and the setup forced me to change my AppleID password since it wouldn't take the old one. That is the only thing I could think of that could have possibly caused an issue that led to this. I tried changing my Apple password back to the original one but Apple won't allow using old passwords again.... I am really annoyed with this issue .......

    Hi,

You do know that since Lion (OS X 10.7) that the Library in the Home folder has been Hidden ?

To See the Library that is inside your Little House icon (Home Folder) folder your have to use the Finder > Go Menu whilst holding down the ALT key to make the Library show in the Menu.

Continue to hold the ALT Key whilst you select the Library, then afterwards you can navigate to the Preferences.

    Hi again,

That does seem a  bit odd.

When the iCloud Keychain was first added I could not get mine to turn On.

It has become so be default via Upgrades since.

However If I try to turn it Off I get this Message.

    iCloudKeychain.png

As you can see my Safari setting is still ON, even though I don't use Safari as my main Browser.

I am sure it also does more that this Safari Passwords thing.

A couple of things occur to me:-

    1) the Keychain may have to be Turned Off first before the other things are.

    2) if you use Safari as your Browser, it may have to be Quit when you do this bit.

    More things.

This is  not the Keychain I was talking about above.

You need to open the  Keycahin Access App which is in Utilities inside Applications

    Screen Shot 2015-04-03 at 20.39.17.png

When Opened it looks a bit like this (not everyone's is the same)

    IDS.png

As I have other drives that the System can read it has two Login "Accounts" the Unlocked and Dark text one belongs to this Mac User Account.

    Also select "Passwords" lower Left.

On the right your needs the IDS: AppleLoginEmailID-Auth Token line.

As you can see there is a dash between the end of the Apple ID and the word Auth.

Thank you Ralph! I followed your instructions and deleted the files. I restarted my macbook, and icloud was still logged in and gave me the same error. Oddly , however, I got the following pop up to sign in.. However, on the icloud window, I do show that I am signed in. The main problem for starting this thread was never being able to sign out to begin with....

After restarting the macbook and opening icloud, this is what I got when I tried to sign out.

    Screen Shot 2015-04-03 at 9.05.33 PM.png

Seconds after, I was prompted to enter my password, but as you can see, the icloud window underneath shows that I was signed in...

    What do you think? =(((

    Hi,

    I am confused.

The first pic says you are trying to remove the iCloud account.

The buttons on the Left only give you the option to Sign Out.

This temporarily removes the Password  and tends to still show the Apple ID that was in use rather than removing that as well.

You can at this point change the Apple ID (and the password) for another iCloud able Apple ID.

If I do this in  Mavericks I see this pop up that encourages me to "Save" the Contacts Locally.

    Screen Shot 2015-04-04 at 21.02.38.png

I can do that with all the Options still ticked.

If I untick each service first I get the same warning at the Contacts one and similar ones about the Calendar and that other services will be available to other devices still.

I cannot see that my Pic is any different to your in other respects.

I do find that sometimes if I need a Restart on an OS update that I have done via the App Store the App Store is still open when I Quit and therefore reappears when it restarts showing the Updates options when it does.

By the time the Start up procedure has fully finished the App Store shows the Featured section.

I.e. Is the window showing your as Logged in  but is not really mostly as it was showing you that before the computer shut down.

I cannot think of any other reason the screen might show your this.

IS it possible to click that OK button and close the System Preferences ?

Hi, have you checked to make sure you are signed in with your Apple ID? I had iMessages working for months then suddenly it stopped sending and receiving messages.  After trying so many different things suggested on various forums, I just went to Messages menu at the top then System Preferences under Accounts and noticed that my iMessage account which is the same as my Apple ID was not logged in.  I think one of the times I restarted the system asked me for the password and I may have entered it incorrectly or just cancelled the request so I was not logged in.  As soon as I logged in the issue was resolved.

My iMessage on my MacBook Pro had gotten "stuck"  No messages from other devices were downloading and I couldn't send a message to anyone.  This worked for me.  Thanks.

    Thanks grbevski

I had other iMessage issues relating to my known contacts NOT showing up in the drop down when I wanted to start a new message. Your fix sorted the problem. Appreciated.

So, I don't know if anyone has fixed this issue yet, but I think I just did.

I spoke with Apple support and the guy figured out it was a Keychains issue on my Mac NOT iCloud.

To fix this follow these steps:

    "Delete Keychains folder from mac"

    1. Click on "Finder".

    2. Hold the "Option" key and click on "Go" in the Menu.

    3. Find the Folder "Keychains" and drag it into the "Trash" bin.

    4. Restart Computer, and then try logging back into the iMessage app again.

    Hope this helps!
    Alex

LOL - I didn't mind that particularly since the other option was probably to reinstall the entire OS.  No thank you!  I don't have a problem remembering passwords anyway.

    Ummm,

For me it is eight accounts in Messages to start with.

Not to mention I have at least three Apple IDs in addition to my iCloud one that I need to remember.

There are a host of old names for some things that I might want to resurrect for testing purposes.

Some apps also log themselves in and I would be struggling to remember as I have had them so long and also Migrated this Mac User account (and it's Keychain) from another computer.

Effectively parts of the Keychain go back to 2004.
