You can still upgrade to OS X 10.7 Lion if you want, by contacting the online Apple store, which in the US is at 800-MY-APPLE. They will sell you a code to download OS X10.7 Lion from the App store.

For either OS X 10.7 or 10.8, while the minimum memory required is 2GB, 4GB is recommended. It's possible any comments about poor running comes from people with 2GB of memory.

As long as your MacBook is compatible with Mountain Lion AND you have "at least" 4 GB of RAM in your MacBook, you should be good to go and will be able to use iCloud:

OS X Mountain Lion system requirements

To install Mountain Lion, you need one of these Macs:

  • iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
  • MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
  • Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
  • Xserve (Early 2009)

Your Mac needs:

  • OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
  • 2 GB or more of memory
  • 8 GB or more of available space

upgrade OS X 10.6.8
