A Verizon iPhone 5 will work in any compatible GSM carrier.

A Verizon iPhone 4S can not be legitimately unlocked to work on a US carrier other than Verizon. If you're using a Verizon iPhone 4S on AT&T, it was hacked to unlock it and you can not get help here.

To address the original question, though, no. You can not use a Verizon iPhone on Virgin Mobile in the US. Virgin Mobile in the US is a CDMA carrier (as is Verizon). They will not permit you to bring your own iPhone to their network. If you want to use Virgin, you must purchase a phone made for Virgin Mobile.

Tim, A few MVNO carriers will let one's iPhone 4S run on At&t with the standard Verizon/Sprint carrier unlock. GoRedPocket and Dataroam are two that are known to work.

I've personally used Dataroam + Sprint iPhone 4S on At&t in the USA.

Sprint and Verizon have a weird relationship. Sprint contract phones can roam on Verizon, but not vice-versa. So case-in-point, its not possible to bring an iPhone on Verizon to Virgin as it's a Sprint network.

GusGus, Just sell it and use the proceeds if you want Virgin Mobile service + iPhone.

Or see if T-mobile has options you're interested in...

But you can also evaluate the MVNO's I've mentioned, you're free to see what options do work.

Where are you getting this information? I want to know because MVNO's are letting the 100% legitamate carrier-unlocked phone access At&t. I've done it with Dataroam.

Also, I will be walking into the USA (in Texas) in 2 weeks with my SIM card from 3 Austria and according to their roaming agreement, my phone will register and work on the At&t network. (maybe t-mobile too) It's not cost effective for data, but I can access At&t at a fairly reasonable rate if I ever need to call Austria again.

You're wrong. The Sprint and Verizon iPhone 4S's can NOT be unlocked for use on any U.S. GSM carriers. Including AT&T. Doing so requires hacking the phone to illegally unlock it. IF you are using a foreign SIM and roaming onto the AT&T network, that's a different situation entirely. You are NOT using AT&T. You are on their network, but your service is supplied by 3 Austria.

You can NOT put an AT&T SIM into a Sprint or Verizon iPhone 4S and use it on AT&T.
