I though I purchased a new mac book pro a year ago. After inserting serial # for technical assistance I find out that my macbook was manufactured over 5 years ago. I'm confused and shocked with this inf. Note: My macbook pro was purchased at B&H. Also, the reason I was trying to get assistance is I'm not able to send attached files via email from my macbook.

It coiuld have been "new" in the sense that it had never been sold before and had just been sitting around in stock for a few years.

What information abou tthe computer did you make your buying decsion based upon?

Have you confirmed that the specs of you computer correspond to those of a 5 year old model and not a one year old model or are you just going buy inforation about the serial number?

Hello Dominic23,

Yes I did today. Called and explained to them what occurred. They seemed interested in helping me with this matter and stated that they will have their team look into this with Apple. They stated that they will get back to me within two days. That gave me some relief and confidence that I will get some support in this matter. Thank you for replying.

Hello Mathew,

I'm pretty much new in this area and admit have much to learn in this subject. As for my purpose in getting the macbook pro was to have a portable device to take with me on the road. I'm a cultural performing artist and many times using imovie for my video projects and garageband for my music etc. Also some photography projects. I'm constantly in use with email and sending documents. Which brought me to this particular problem when yesterday I was trying to send an attached file via email and continued to reject it. So when I contacted Apple Technical support on line it asked me for serial#. When I keyed in the serial# it relied technical assistance not available for device manufactured over 5 years.

Hi Dr.,

The reason for my questions is the follwing:

The serial number of you computer indicates that it is a 5 years old model, but do the actual specifications of the computer confirm that?

If you choose About This Mac from the Apple menu and look at the Processor specs you can determine the exact model of your MacBook Pro and when it was being manufactured.

So, for example, a 15" MacBook Pro with a 2.5GHz Core 2 Duo processor is an ealry 2008 model while a 15" MacBook Pro with a 2.4GHz Core i7 processor would be a late 2011 model.

It probably is a 5 year old model as the serial number indicates, but because of the unusual circumstances surrounding the purchase it seems to me something you might want to confirm. Out of curiousity, if nothing else.

I your're curious, post the processor spec and screen size and I can help look it up.

Actually that is a Late 2011 as the early 15" models had a i7 Quad core 2.1 CPU anmd the late 2011s have the 2.2 i7 Quad core CPU.

The only thing that comes to mind is you entered the serial number wrong at the Apple site or Apple database is messed up.

You need to Call Apple and speak to someone directly. Have the Correct serial number handy. It can be found in About this Mac or it is etched on the bottom of the case near the back edge. It is failry small so use a magnifying glass to read and write it down

As you sending files and them being rejected. That can happen for several reasons.

1) The file you are sending exceeds your ISPs attachment size limit.

2) The file you are sending exceeds the recipients ISPs attachment size limit.

3) The file you are sending is one that has been restricted because of the nature of the file, a .EXE (and maybe even Mac OS X DMG files) as that is a Executable which some ISPs and mail providers reject. Or it is a Zip file that contains a .EXE or the file is of some other type your or their ISP rejects.

4) Then it could be your Mail program, but that is doubtful as if it was the mail program you are using the Email wouldn't be sent and you would not receive a Rejection notice.
