My computer froze and I turned it off. When trying to turn it back on all I get is a white/grey screen but it will not go any further. I have performed a safe boot but still no result!
any suggestions will be much appreciated!

If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
