I am looking to update the OS on my old Macbook that is currently running Mac OS X 10.4.11 (8S2167). I am looking for the cheapest way to get to the latest OS Lion. Please provide the steps needed to proceed. Thank you for your help.

Purchase a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD from the online Apple Store, phone them, and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Lion requires a Mac with a Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) or better CPU and at least 2GB of RAM.

This Mac has the 2 GHz Intel Core Duo and 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM so therefore I should only update to OS X 10.6 on this system? If sounds like it wouldn't be worth it to put more into the Mac at this point.
It can't be upgraded past Mac OS X 10.6.8.
