Can I add more than 4 GB of RAM to my Early 2008 24-Inch iMac?

I have an Early 2008 24" iMac with 4 GB of RAM (2 × 2 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM). I'm running Lion, which is a 64-bit OS, so shouldn't I be able to add more than the Apple-defined RAM maximum of 4GB? I'm thinking 6 – 8 GB is where I'd rather be.

Thanks for your help.

It's an old thread but just wanted to say that I've just upgraded to 8GB on my iMac early 2008 and all seems to be working fine. Mem seems to be addressed and used properly even when it reaches 7GB. No system freezing/crashing whatsoever. Also, I haven't restarted my system for quite a while now and the only downside is that kernel process has trippled in used memory size.

As a Photoshop user, I can't say how much this expansion has helped in day to day work.
