Mono-To-Stereo Sound From 8mm Conversion In iMovie Does Not Play On DVD

I uploaded some old 8mm home movies to iMovie by using my DV camera as a digital converter. Since my 8mm deck only has a mono audio output, I used a Y adapter to convert the sound into two channels of "stereo."

All of this works fine during upload and playback in both iMovie 4.0.1 and Quicktime 7.1 Pro. However, when I burned a DVD in iDVD 4.0.1 from a project like this only the stereo sound played back properly.

For instance, I created a movie with the first part's source being a true stereo VHS tape and the second part's a mono 8mm tape. When the 8mm portion plays back on my DVD players/TVs/computer - it is silent.

Did iDVD get confused during the burn? What do I do?

Hmmm... when audio passes thru the camcorder it can get out of sync if the camcorder is set for lower quality 12 bit sound rather than 16 bit. But if it's not playing at all, perhaps try Extracting the audio in iMovie from the 8mm clip (it's really just duplicating the audio track and supressing the original audio). This will force iMovie to deal with the sound more explicitly, and perhaps that will make the jump better to iDVD. Does it play correctly in iDVD before burning?

Sorry... within iMovie, select the 8mm clip and use Advanced/Extract Audio to make a copy of the 8mm audio come down to one of the audio tracks (you'll see this). The original 8mm audio will be suppressed and a new audio file will be created within iMovie's media assets (won't easily see this file). More detail than you need perhaps, but this new audio file will have to be separately encoded during the iDVD/burning process, and that could result in audio during the 8mm part of your video.
