i have a new iMac i want to install adobe photoshop elements 10, I only have the DVDs. Is there another way of installing this software?

Get an external superdrive. Or if you have another Mac, use that Mac's optical drive and connect the two together in Target Disk Mode.

Target Disk Mode won't allow mounting of the optical drive, only of the primary hard drive. You're probably thinking of Remote Disk:

No I meant to "borrow" the other Mac's optical drive, with the new Mac as the Target. cornelius puts it succinctly here, except we're not talking about a Mac with a broken drive. And you would select the Adobe DVD, not the "install disc."

I suggest that you get a firewire cable. Then boot the computer with the working optical drive into Firewire Target Disk Mode, startup the computer with the broken drive and hold down the Option key. Then select the install disk as boot and startup and proceed with installation.

On your MacBook in the sharing preferences you can share the DVD or CD to use it remotely from your new iMac.

I haven't tried Target Disk Mode in a while so perhaps it's more flexible now, but in the past it would only recognize the primary volume on the first ATA channel. Perhaps once Apple moved to all SATA drives that's now changed. If so, my apologies for saying that it wouldn't work. Remote Disk is another option as well.
