Mail application not accessing Mac mail

The Mail application on my MacBook Pro (v6.2m OS X 10.8.2) cannot access my incoming mail. It asks for my password, I enter it, continues to ask. I copied all of my setting from the Mail application on my Mac Mini (which, incidentally, works just fine), but I continue to get the same response. I can access Google mail using that account, I can also check mail at iCloud but I am not pleasesd with the way it works (too slow, combersome, etc. for me). Any suggestions other than wiping my hard drive and reinstalling thesystem software?

Thanks.

Thanks for your response!

I followed directions and then some. Keychain First Aid found no problems via verify or repair. Close, restart, I continue to get the "mail can't connect to the account 'jwgeorgen@mac.com'." Reboot = same result. I added the eMail address of jwgeorgen@me.com separated with a comma, same thing. The preferences indicate that the account(s) are offline, GMail works fine. The last eMail via my .mac addressed was downloaded on 3/3/13.

I opended Pacifist to try to extract the Mail application, failed. Oh no....
