Screen upper third goes darker sometimes

I have a mid 2008 20" iMac and now most times the top 1/3 of the screen goes darker. Making it hard to see any information in the top 1/3. Is there anything that can be done through settings that might change this? Or must I go to Apple to have a new screen installed?

iMac, iOS 6.0.2, Purchased in August 2008

It's a hardware problem (OS X can't adjust the brightness of only one part of the display, and it's impossible to do this), so take the computer to an Apple Store or reseller to get the display replaced. Unfortunately, it's the only solution
