Networking OS 8.6 with OS X help needed

I need to network an old Power Computing clone running 8.6 to one of my more current Macs in order to get some files off a short stack of Jaz disks. I can get the clone to see the drives on a PPC running 10.2 but have had no luck actually moving them. As the process begins the clone always freezes. I've followed some instructions I found in a 2010 c|net article (using ethernet and TCP/IP settings and Chooser), but I really don't know what I'm doing or what to try next. I also have a MacBookPro running 10.6.8 but thought I'd have more luck with an older OS. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

If both computers are connected via the built-in Ethernet switch of a router, and if there for some reason is a problem with file sharing, you may want to try transfers over the Internet instead. For a limited number of smaller files, email attachments would be one possibility.

Setting up web sharing under Mac OS 8.6 could perhaps be another way. This would allow you to access files on the old computer from a Mac OS X machine, using a normal web browser.

Yet another possibility could be FTP (either by letting an FTP client at the 8.6 machine push files, or by installing a small FTP server there).
