I have a similar problem, although I can get it to work if I connect the printers directly to the MacBook Pro. I am new to Mac, so this might be a simple fix... I just haven't figured out how to do it yet.
I have a Canon i960 and an HP LaserJet 1012. Both Canon and HP state that Tiger 10.4.6 have built in drivers to support the printers. When I plug either printer in directly to the mbp, both are recognized immediately and work great.
The problem is that I still use two Windows PC's in the house and the printers are both connected to the PC. I can share the Printers from the PC, and the mbp can see both of them, but the printer setup asks me to choose the device type, and neither of my printers show up in the list. I went out and bought a print server thinking I could solve the problem that way, and have the same problem... the device list does not display the i960 or the 1012.
So both of our problems seem to stem from the fact that the printer we are trying to install doesn't show up in the printer device list.
