Some chinese characters in emails sent from the iPhone 4S get garbled

Hi, does anyone know why some chinese characters that are sent in emails from an iPhone 4S get garbled?

I type the email using the chinese handwriting input and it all looks fine, but when the email is recieved a lot of the characters have been turned into squares and question marks, like the encoding is wrong. The same characters have been garbled when I view the email in my sent box.

I'm using iPhone 4S with iOS 6.1.2. When I tried sending the same email using an iPhone 5 I don't get this problem...

Is there a way to fix this?

Please compose a simple message in Chinese and send it to me and I will try to see what the problem is (tom at bluesky dot org).

Hi Tom,

Looking at some Chinese forums, it's apparantly an issue with the encoding when sending emails via an Outlook account. I changed my mail to now go through Gmail and it's working fine now 🙂

Don't know why Outlook doesn't work though :S

If you are talking about "exchange", I think it is fairly common to see reports of that causing problems with both character sets and content-transfer encodings. I guess it is just better to use MS apps with that.

Do you have this problem? Are you also using MS Exchange/Outlook?
