I have read the procedure and it does not work because the Sync option does not exist in the current version of iTunes, unless I'm missing something that is not too obvious.
I would like to use my own photos for the screen saver.

Follow the instructions in the link and MAKE SURE that you are logged into the same network as your Home Network sharing account.

Between the time of my post and the time of your reply I discovered the answer was actually my confusion between the meaning of a linking to iTunes and linking to a Shared iTunes.
In order to accomplish my goal I had to Disconnect the linked iTunes account and relink to the iTunes account on my Mountain Lion computer. After that everything fell into place and the options were available as I thought they should have been in the first place.
I hope my discovery and your reply will help another who may yet stumble on the same issue.
