Mail app erases Gmail webmail

I use my gmail alot using my web browser. But ever since I connected my gmail to the Mac Mail app, I find now that all my emails are deleted online. So when I am away from my iMac and I access my gmail from a web browser, all my emails are gone. But when I go back to my iMac, my gmail emails are there.

How come Mac Mail deletes my gmail emails online?

Gmail will behave as you have it set up in Mail's Preferences.

Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts (in Mail's menu bar), choose your gmail account. There's probably an "Advanced" tab. Click there and find a checkbox that says something like "Remove copy from server after retrieving a message."

Set it as you wish.

Did you set it up as a POP system? and if yes, why would you do that.
