How does one remove incorrect place names beyond "Manage My Places"

I've been trying to update all of my locations and ran into some of the common problems. I started off going through "Manage My Places" and removed duplicates, resized the radii to remove overlap, and made sure they were all placed correctly.

When I started running through my photos for a second pass, I noticed that there were places added that were not in "My Places" I tried to take the photos tagged to those locations and remove the location, then re-tag the photo with one of my edited "Places"

I then went through "Places" and tried to reassign all of the pictures to my places and delete the location data that wasn't in "My Places"

However, these place names (and others that were assigned based on the GPS coordinates, but are not accurate) keep showing up. For example, I have photos (snaps from my iPhone) at a kid salon called Pigtails and Crewcuts; however, as it's near Pearl Harbor, it was initially tagged as Base Navy Housing. Base Navy Housing is not in "My Places, and removing the locations and retagging them with Pigtails and Crewcuts from My Places doesn't help; I can't even put the accurate place name first, and Base Navy Housing second.

It seems as though My Places only collects some locations, especially those that I adjusted. Some (both with GPS tagging and with a place added without editing the place) seem to be hiding in the system without showing up in My Places, and removing them from the photos doesn't remove them from the system. Anyone know how to eliminate them? Aside from the huge effort involved, I don't even think that deleting all of my place data would work.

At what scale of the map are you viewing your your places? I also found it very vexing, that old place names keep pooping up, after changing the names to more specific names.

But which place name you see will depend on the zoom level. For example, the pin labelled "Mpumalanga" shows the name of the province, not the name of the place I assigned. I'd prefer the pin to show something more interesting, like "Krüger Park", but that is impossible at that zoom level.

As I zoom in, I'll see a whole sequence of different place names for the same pin, and only finally the most specific name that I picked "Bourke's Luck Potholes".

I simply gave up on forcing the maps to show specific names at the intermediate zoom level and concentrate on getting the most specific place names right:

  • I zoom into the map to the most detailed zoom level,
  • Create a new place with a more specific name and a small radius

and my photos will show the new name.

This way I can search for my place names and I will see them when I zoom in. The intermediate place names are not stored on your computer, they come from Apple's map server and cannot be edited. You can only send Apple feedback, if there are places with a wrong location or a too large radius.

LeonieDF,

Thanks for the response. It sounds as though I may be stuck with it - I've already gone through to create places I defined with name, center and radius of my devising for all my library, and cleaned them up in My Places. At the highest zoom level, the pins look right, but when I see the name of the location in the small map in the Insepctor bar, it often doesn't match.

The root problem seems to be that "My Places" isn't - if I go to the Places view, I have 859 places, but less than 700 in My Places. Some of these are random places that got swept up, some are duplicates. The problem is that I have 1 Aloha Tower in "My Places" but in the Places menu, I have 2. When I look in the Inspector, , it lists both (Aloha Tower, Aloha Tower, Honolulu, Hawaii). The Base Navy Housing example in my original post is another example - I don't know how to delete these "places" that aren't in "My Places" that make it look messy. Honestly, they haven't done anything other than make it look messy - but if I didn;t want it neat and organized, I wouldn't have added locations to 15 or 16 thousand pictures. 🙂

MCE,

the "Aloha Tower" is a good example: I added some places to Hawaii, but never an Aloha Tower. When I search in "Manage my places" for "Aloha Tower", I see two of them: Both are predefined in the "Places" view.

  • Aloha Tower, Honolulu, Hawaii, United States - it seems to be part of Apple's map database
  • Aloha Tower, Honolulu - slightly farther to the west - shown in the section "Google results".

I downloaded a picture of the Aloha Tower and tagged it with GPS and imported it to Aperture. Aperture assigned the first Place: Aloha Tower, Honolulu, Hawaii, and this place now shows up in "Manage My Places". So Aperture seems to use the Map places in prefererence to the Google Places when assigning the places names automatically.

But it is really difficult to get a tidy places list, if you start with geotagged photos. If you take four pictures while walking, all pictures have slightly different GPS coordinates, this may result in four entries in "My Places".

I decided to wait for the next Aperture release before investing more work into cleaning up my places list.
