when i connect my iphone 2gs to computer and sync i lost many apps how can i restore that apps? how it'll happend?

i'm having iphone 2gs of ios 3.1.3 when connect my phone to computer i lost many apps. but i tried to download forn app store but it is showing update reqired 4.2. but previously i did not get any error?
