Axiom 25

I'm new in both logic and midi controls. Does anyone use any of the M-Audio AXIOM (25,49 or 61) midi-controllers with Logic Express 7 and if so what are some quick starter steps for assigning sounds to keys.

There's two way of doing this:

The easiest way is to set-up the Axiom to send MMC with the transport. You can do that easily with Enigma. Next, set-up Logic to receive MMC. You'll find that in the Synchronization window (File>Song Settings>Synchronization), MIDI tab.

The other way is assign unused midi messages to the Axiom transport (again, you can do that with Enigma) and in Logic, go to Key Commands and assign those midi messages to the Commands you want (play, stop, rec, etc).

Hi Everyone,
This is a real bear to get going, but once you do it's sweet. I took about 3 hours to set up my Axiom 25 today. I have completely wiped out the factory presets and fully customized it using Enigma.

The easiest way in Logic Pro 7 is to use "Learn Mode" to map each key & knob. Also make sure that Logic is recieving MMC to use the transport buttons. What I did was started a new bank in Enigma, then started with preset 1 and designed a complete set of keys that worked with window set 1 and moved down the line for the window sets that I find useful. Now my controller is tricked out for audio editing, step squencing, synth programming, etc and so on.

Definately print out page 17 of the Axiom owners manual and the appendices. Hit up Chapter 22 (page 655) in the Logic Pro Reference Manual for instructions on setting up control surfaces. Page 668 gets right into it, but you should read the beginning of the chapetr so you have a grip on whats going on.

Here's my word of warning. Reason 3.0 is not to friendly with this this keyboard. I started working on a proper mapping of it, but it isn't working so well. The factory mapping has the middle octave keys doing things in the mixer like EQ kills!! It's a total cobjob and needs to be redone!

Hope I helped and rock on!

Hey... got an Axiom 49 and it's drivin' nuts. If the post(er) above could hook us DUMMies up, he'd be a true hero. I'm so used to working with ensoniq workstation stuff and now working with a controller and LOGIC ain't getting too logical for me....

Is there a way, if someone has their AXIOM mapped out for Logic Pro (or express), that they could provide a file that others could use? I mean, if this guy took three hours to set his up, I'd be glad to toss him some $$ or a something (?) in return for his efforts.
Thanks.

I'm experiencing some major delay time when i hit the key to when i hear the sound. I have a Motu 828mkII and use Logic Pro 7. Do you think usb is the best way to connect? I have a G4 dual processor. I tried midi as well and i didn't seem any better. Whats the deal with this, my crappy 10 year old keyboards have less delay time! Also, I too would gladly pay for your logic 7 presets for Enigma. Ofcourse its called enigma..**** it. I thought it was gonna come with presets for Logic. Right now I feel like this keyboard ***** and I want to return it.

Um? Agreed.. My Axion 49 is causing more grief than pleasure. It seems to work better with Garage Band than it does with LOGIC. I still can't make my transport buttons work with either, the whole process is funky and the latency of playing software instruments is really weird... I reckon mine's gonna on ebay for a loss.... I'll go back to a keyboard workstation (which one? dunno)////\\\\

Just got an Axiom 61 two days ago and I have to say I'm not experiencing any latency problems whatsoever (plugged as midi or usb). Have you tried plugging in another keyboard just to check?

I do agree with everyone here that the control setup is less than obvious and the docs are dismal. This thread is actually the first place I found myself after trying to understand what was going on. You need to wrap your mind around a lot of midi concepts to take full advantage of its possibilities, but I've managed to get a lot of things to work within Logic. Now, this is for Logic Pro 7 and I've never used Express so things might work a little differently, but I figure this might give you trail to follow.

A couple of pointers:
- In Enigma, create a new preset bank. You'll get a bank containing 20 untitled and blank presets. Go back to the Axiom 49 defaults bank (or 61 in my case) and copy preset 17 called Use for Midi learn. Paste on your first preset and upload to your keyboard (using the Device menu or the large arrow on top). You've just sent a plain vanilla preset to your Axiom and you can now start working on the next step.

- To trigger key commands: in Logic Pro, open the key command window. type in "play" in the search field. Select the appropriate command and click the "Learn New Assignment" button at the bottom right of the window. Click the "play" button on your keyboard and you'll see data appear in the key commands assignment field. Your Axiom should now control playback. I'm not using MMC at all and it works fine.
Do this for any key command you wish to assign. I've got all the playback buttons working and use the "loop" key on the Axiom to trigger the key command "capture last take as recording".

I'm also able to control plug-ins and VIs but I'm not sure if this is possible in Express.

This is a really short and quick explanation but if it makes any sense to you guys I'll elaborate a bit more - it's really late and I need some sleep now 🙂
Hope this helps
