Q: Is Mt. Lion (10.8) OS compatible with FCP 7 and other FCP Studio 3 apps?

I am currently running Lion (10.7.5) on a 27" iMac 3.4 Ghz.

 

Is Mt. Lion compatible with Final Cut Pro 7 and FCS 3 studio apps like Compressor 3.5, Color and DVDSP4? Will these programs still run or will they be not supported by the new OS as has been the case with past apps when a new OS is introduced?

    Greetings Phil;

    I've been running the Final Cut Studio 7.0.3 apps on Mountin Lion (10.8.2) since it's introduction and have not experienced any issues with any of the applications. 

     

    I have four Final Cut systems in my edit bay (1 27" iMac, two MacBook Pro's and one MacPro system)...all with FCP 7.0.3 and all running Mountain Lion 10.8.2.

    Hi Syd,

     

    My 27" iMac is mid-2011. A few questions:

     

    1) Did you have FCP 7.0.3 already installed when you upgraded to Mt. Lion?

    2) Did you make a copy (clone) of your iMac's & other Mac's HD before you installed as I was advised to do?

        If so, what app did you use to do this and did you copy onto an external drive and partition it?

    3) If you copied onto another drive, did you erase your original HD and do a fresh install of Mt. Lion and FCP             7.0.3?

     

    I know these suggestions are the prudent way to go but I'm wondering if it's really necessary.

    Greetings Phil;

    The Final Cut apps were indeed already installed on all of my machines and no I didn't make a clone of my HD before taking the plunge. 

     

    I certainly understand the wisdom of doing the clone but my upgrade experience with Apple (by the way, I've made my living with Apple products since 1989) has always been positive and to date I haven't had any upgrade issues. 

     

    I don't know your workflow situation, but I wouldn't do the upgrade in the midst of a project or during a busy time.  Also on a side note I can't say that I saw any performace improvement in the FCP applications after the upgrade to Mountain Lion.  Although Mountain Lion certainly has a large number of features and performance perks for other apps, as I said...I didn't see any performace boost for FCP.  Just my experience.

    Well, Syd, I'll be done with one project by mid-week and I have about a week to 10 days before I start the next one so then would be the time to "take the plunge". May I ask how long the actual process of the download and install of Mt. Lion took? I am assuming you were running Lion (10.7) prior to that.

    Hi Syd,

     

    Did you do your upgrades directly from Lion to Mt. Lion? I ask because the Applecare rep said the majority of problems have occurred with those going from Leopard or Snow Leopard to Mt. Lion.

    Hi Syd,

     

    Just finished a project and am preparing to upgrade. One question: are your ancillary apps with FCP 7 such as Compressor 3.5.3, Motion 4.0.3, Quicktime Player 10.1 running OK? I also use Mpeg Streamclip and Toast 9. They all run fine with Lion. I saw on the Roxio website that Toast 10 is not supported by Mt. Lion and Toast 11 is testing software updates for compatibility with Mt. Lion.

    All of my FCP Studio apps are functioning normally, as well as Quicktime (version 10.2).  Also, Toast 9.0.2 works as expected.  All the best on you upgrade!

    The new OS is going well. Glad I made the transition. It has some great features and overall, my iMac screen seems to be brighter and clearer. I guess the  next hurdle is FCP X. What are your feelings on this?

    Greetings Phil;

    Glad to hear that the transition has gone well and that you're enjoying the new OS features!  I have FCP X on all of the machines in my edit bay, but at this point I work exclusively with Final Cut Studio. 

     

    When FCP X was launched, in it's initial form it simple didn't work with the my workflow and the amount of work that I have to deal with on a daily basis.  Also there was(for me a least) a BIG learning curve in order to make the transitiion.  It was time that I didn't have...and still don't!  Also I'm sort of an "old dog" in this game and learning the new system hasn't been a priority for me. 

     

    I would encourage you to move forward with it.  I know that Apple has made huge improvements in the software since it's initial release.
