I was using my iPad 2 yesterday when suddenly the sound was off. No keypad sounds, no alerts, not even the click when the cover is closed or the sound it Akers when you plug it in to charge. And my voice recorded sounds don't work either. Why? I have seen discussions on this but nothing that helped. Any suggestions?

If you lose sounds for keyboard clicks, games or other apps, email notifications and other notifications, system sounds may have been muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock rotation can be accessed via the task bar in the same manner as described above.

Um, no. No help so far. There's "mute" but not "mute system sounds". I want to know why it's muted and how I can un-mute it. The support article just says how you can mute it, using something that isn't there ("mute system sounds". Any suggestions? Maybe an image would help?
Do you have sound in the music app? If you do, then systems sounds are muted.
Check the side switch above the volume rocker on the side of the iPad. Flip it the other way and see if you get sound from the apps.
If not, double tap the home button to bring up the task bar at the bottom. In the task bar swipe all the way to the right. Look on the far left side and see if there is a speaker icon. If there is, tap it and see if the sounds on apps come back. Then tap the home button.
Okay, checked. The only switch next to the sound rocker was the on/off button. I tried that first, before posting this. Went to the task bar. There was a speaker, but it was turned on; touching it muted sound. :-(
There is a switch just above the volume adjustment. That is the side switch. That is the button that you want to try to flip the other way. When you flip the side switch to the "on" position, you will see an orange dot next to it. When you turn it to the "off" position, the orange dot is hidden.
The power button is on top of the iPad on the upper right corner if your are holding the iPad in portrait mode with the home button at the bottom.
But you still didn't answer this question and its important to know - do you have sound in the music app? Can you play your songs OK?
That switch is the lock button. I have the orange dot showing and the iPad is locked to landscape. Should this turn the sound on? So far, no.
No it should not turn off the sound if it has the orientation locked. You also stated that the Sound switch in the task bar DID turn off the system sounds when you tapped it .... So once again .... Do you have sound in the Music App?
Go to Settings>Sounds>Ringers and Alerts. How do you have that set? Describe it. If the button is set to Off and the volume slider is all the way down, adjust the volume up and see what happens.
Okay, I think we need to clarify the terms here. What you call the side switch is there to lock the orientation, right? It does, and there is an orange dot when it's on. It is the ONLY button I can find next to the sound rocker and in the settings it does offer you the option of using it to mute(nothing about muting system sounds), but I don't have that switched on. I have checked the music - no, it doesn't make any sound. I don't have any songs of my own there, but the Moonlight Sonata seems to have come with the computer and it doesn't make a sound when I press play, though it does seem to be playing. On the sounds/ringers and alerts in "settings" everything is, as far as I can see, turned on, as it was when everything suddenly stopped working. The volume is up the top. I have just switched on "change with buttons" but I haven't a clue where the volume buttons are. The thing is, one minute it was all working, the ext minute it wasn't. Is there anything I could have tapped or pressed by accident while in the middle of using my iPad that would have turned it all off?
Got the same problem and tried all the same stuff mentioned. Nothing worked yet.
Could the sounds be locked by a particular application?
The iPad is a computer after all. Turn it off, turn it back on to reboot. Worked for me.
Our info tech teacher turned it off properly and rebooted. It worked. Mind you, it no longer clicks when closed, but the rest of the sound is back.
I am having the same problem with my iPad. I have switched it off 3 times to get the sound back and it hasn't worked. I used my earphones last night and when I plugged it back out the audio stopped working. I didn't change any of the usual settings in which the audio usually worked. There is no audio with clicks or anything at all. It seems like the audio thinks I still have the earphones plugged in.
