Q: how do use itunes on external hard drive to a new computer

had an old computer with an external hard drive. I NOW want to use that same external hard drive to run on my new computer. i only use the external hard drive to store my music. thanks for help.. please help me.. i am using windows 8

I thought your external drive has the letter F: - the media path should be F:\iTunes\iTunes Media

Ah. Temporarily disable McAfee. Shift-start iTunes to open the correct library. Close iTunes. Wait a few moments for the library to save. Open iTunes in the normal way. Does the correct library open now?

Assuming it does my recommendation is to uninstall McAfee and replace it with Microsoft Security Essentials.

That worked now.

Now, when I plug in my Ipod I get the following message:

THE IPOD XXX CANNOT BE SYNCHED THE REQUIRED FOLDER CANNOT BE FOUND"

What can I do?

See TS3697: iTunes: Unable to sync photos. I suspect you either need to change/set the folder that photos are synced from, or delete the iPod Photo Cache folder from inside it.

I have no photos on my ipod. I just have music with album covers.

Other suggestions I can find are:

Try plugging the device into a different USB port.

Backup the device and then restore it.

I restored my ipod to factory settings. How do I now copy the music to my external hard drive to my ipod? Thanks for the help.

Your media is in your library. Choose one or more playlists to sync to the device and then sync...

Thanks for the quick response, but I am confused.

What library are you talking about? If possible could you give me the steps involved?

Also, can I back track.

I got rid all of my duplicates in iTunes. Also when I go to choose library by holding down shift key and Itunes there is no file in the box that says file name. Is that ok? At the present time my music shows up and plays when I connect to ITunes. I just cannot sync.

Why are you still having to choose a library? I thought we'd fixed that problem by now? Every time you open iTunes you should see your media....

Why can't you sync? Does the restored device not show up in iTunes?

I see my media when I open Itunes.

My ipod does show up when I plug into my pc computer, but I can not sync.

my ipod shows up in tunes. My ipod has been restored to factory settings. There is nothing on the ipod. When I click on the synch button nothing happens. I believe it is suppose to sync automatically.

Have you selected content to sync from the various tabs? If you restore the earlier backup to it (assuming we're talking iPod touch) then it should recall the selections.

Under Edit > Preferences > Advanced there is an option that reads Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically. I generally advise enabling this option as it is safer, but you can untick it if you want.

When the device is connected there is an option on the summary tab for it the reads Open iTunes when this iPod is connected. Tick this if you want that to happen.
