Trackpad Button Keeps Registering False Left Clicks

I have been using a MacBook Pro since they were released and today I started experienceing an odd problem. The trackpad keeps registering a left click without being touched. Sometimes it is like a click and release. Sometimes it registers like the button is down for seconds or minutes at a time.

My question is whether it is a firmware issue or a hardware issue? It seems like the center of the button doesn't have as much action as it once did. But perhaps it is my imagination. And there were some firmware upgrades a couple of days back, so I wonder if it is possible that something went wrong with that instead of something going wrong with the pad physically. Any suggestions on what to do?

I'm 2 hours away from any place that is able to service the machine. And the problem is intermittent. RIght now, I can hardly type because it keeps registering a click and selecting the text or moving the the text input cursor back to the mouse pointer. But then sometimes it will work without a problem for 30 minutes. I'm afraid I'll drive out to the dealer and it will not exhibit the ghost clicking while they have it. If anyone can suggest something to try before I resort to having it serviced, I would be in your debt.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it is not due to the pad being touched. Firstly, I have clicking and double clicking disabled for the trackpad itself, so I would have to hit the actual button below the pad, and I am quite certain I am not. I have been working at this machine for aproxiamtely 8 hours a day since February and haven't registered one false click until today and now it does it very often.

Also the issue is not limited to times when I am typing. I can leave this machine unattended with a Safari Window as the active window, with the cursor over the desktop, and come back a few minutes later to find the Safari wondow inactive and the Toolbar switched to finder.

I can leave my cursor over a link in Safari for a few moments, and typicaly the link will activate, as if clicked, within a few moments.

I think there is probably something wrong with the contacts under the button, but I'm still hoping it is something else because I would hate to part with it long enough to get it fixed. :P

I do apreciate the advice though! Thanks to your suggestion, at least I can type without the cursor repositioning constantly. It will make the machine a lot easier to work with for now.

Found out what was happening with my trackpad button today.

The button thing kept getting worse until it registered as being clicked at all times. I had to set it so that it doesn't accept trackpad input when a USB mouse is plugged in it got so bad.

But at the same time, odd things were happening with the battery. It would get to about 40% on the gauge and then die completely without going into sleep mode. Then I would check the battery gauge underneath and it would not even flash. Plugged into AC, I would turn it back on and the battery would say it was at 40%, even though the thing was so depleted that without AC power, it couldnt turn on the charge indicator lights.

Today, it shut down at 40% life again, and I turned the machine over to check the battery, and the whole top surface was starting to peel away from the battery and the center was bulged. The interior side turned out to be bulging as well.

With the battery out, the trackpad button works fine. With the battery in, it puts enough pressure on the panel above that it interferes witht he button and it fels tight and unresponsive.

So the whole trackpad issue is the result of sharing very close quarters with a seriously damaged battery.
