DVD not working

Hi, Just bought a reconditioned Macbook Pro running OSX Mountain Lion. I am new to Macs. The make and spec is;

Macbook Pro 15 inch mid 2009 2.66Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo 4gb memory

When I insert a DVD into the drive it just rejects it, same with Cd`s....

I dont have Imovie or Iphoto installed with the Mac - How can I download this software?

any help/suggestions would be really appreciated....

I guess I am wondering if I perhaps I need drivers for MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868... ? or whether the DVD player/reader is bust....

I'm assuming you mean Apple Refurb as oppsoed to rebuilt by somebody else?

I'd take it straight back and have them sort it. Any required drivers are already built into the OS.

As for iMovie or iPhoto, you can buy them from the App Store. Check the specs.
