Dock icons: dragging them doesn't work nowadays

Yup, after many moons not fiddling with such things, I tried to rearrange a dock item or two. No amount of dragging did it. Also, the ability to remove them by dragging them to the desktop and watching them vanish in a puff of cartoon smoke has stopped, too.😟

What might have happened, please?

Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences folder and trash these files

com.apple.Dock.plist

com.apple.dock.db

Then log out and back in or restart.

(You'll need to reset your Dock the way you like it)

Deleting the plist reset the Dock. Thanks. No .db was found; the closest were a pair of .dbs in ~/Library/App Support/Dock which I left alone (of course).

Any idea how this came about? I looked in the plist but couldn't discern an option that was locking it. I had had TotalFinder on it on trial which had ended, but can't reproduce this issue as it won't let me re-trial it. Someone else reading this might investigate...
