activity monitor still showing virtual memory despite turning it off

I've used the command line discussed at this link to disable virtual memory. Although I could be imagining it, performance seems quite a bit better. However, Activity Monitor still shows virtual memory being assigned to each application - same as when it was turned on. Cocktail's memory preferences do show that file swapping has been disabled. Did it work? And if so, is activity monitor unaware of VM being disabled. And if not, what am I missing?
